Dental Leaders Advocate for Top Oral Health Executive

CHICAGO, Illinois – The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), the American Association for Dental Research (AADR), the American Association of Public Health Dentistry (AAPHD), and the Special Care Dentistry Association (SCDA) this week urged our nationís legislators to restore the position of chief dental officer with executive-level authority and resources to oversee the Health Resources and Services Administrationís (HRSA) dental programs and oral health initiatives. Leaders from these four organizations convened on Capitol Hill to advocate that good oral health is an essential public health need, and the agencyís current staffing structure fails to adequately support individuals across the country.

ADHA Teams with Other Oral Health Professionals to Help Reduce Childhood Obesity

WASHINGTON, District of Columbia – The National Maternal and Child Oral Health Resource Center (OHRC) at Georgetown University has been awarded $747,689 by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) to identify opportunities for engaging oral health professionals (dentists, dental hygienists, and dental assistants) in reducing childhood obesity by using evidence-based recommendations and strategies. The project aligns with two RWJF goals: (1) to eliminate young childrenís consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and (2) to ensure that children enter kindergarten at a healthy weight.

ADA, White House Partner on Opioid Abuse Prevention Initiative

WASHINGTON, District of Columbia – The American Dental Association today announced it is entering a strategic partnership with the White House and the Department of Health and Human Services to help prevent opioid drug-related overdoses and deaths. MADISON, Wisconsin – The Chinese have designated 2011 "The Year of the Rabbit," however, the bunnies are being asked to step aside because the president of the United States' fastest growing health organization, The American Academy for Oral Systemic Health (AAOSH) is proclaiming the year 2011 as the "Year of the Mouth." AAOSH is taking a stand that the mouth is the first place to start for overall body health and longer life. California Dental Association Foundation Awards Community Grant to Oakland Dentist

Recipient to bring dental care to underserved communities

SACRAMENTO, California – The California Dental Association Foundation has announced Luis Rivera, DDS, as the 10th recipient of its innovative and charitable Dental Student Loan Repayment Grant Program. Rivera, who graduated from the University of California, San Francisco, School of Dentistry in 2009, will receive a maximum of $105,000 to help offset significant student loan debt in exchange for a three-year commitment to work in an underserved community.

Second Annual New York City Oral Cancer Walk

ALBANY, New York – The NYU Chapter of the Student National Dental Association (SNDA) will lead New York City's second annual Oral Cancer Walk to raise awareness of a disease that kills over 7,000 American men and women each year. Major risk factors are tobacco and heavy alcohol use. If detected in its earliest stages, however, oral cancer is easily treated. The key is early detection and prevention. Free oral cancer screenings will be available at sites along the walk route.

AGD Releases Scorecard for 109th Congress; Extends Gratitude to Representatives

CHICAGO, Illinois – The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) released its first ever voting record scorecard for the 109th Congress. This scorecard ranks members of Congress on how they have supported the dentistry profession within the past year, and also details how each member voted compared to the AGD's desired outcome. If the AGD asked members of Congress to co-sponsor a bill, and/or support a bill, they were ranked according to the AGD's views. A "yes" position required that the legislator supported the AGD position, which resulted in a score of 10 percent for that issue. There are ten issues, therefore, the potential for legislators to earn a 100 percent ranking.

PORTLAND, Oregon – The ODS Companies (ODS), through a wholly owned subsidiary, has partnered with the Washington State Dental Association (WSDA) to purchase Northwest Dentists Insurance Company (NORDIC), Washington's leading professional and general liability insurance company for dentists. American Dental Association Awarded EPA Grant

SOUTHBOROUGH, Massachusetts – The Massachusetts Dental Society's Yankee Dental Congress (YDC) 28 gave a much needed boost to the local economy by bringing in more than $18 million to Boston, the highest amount of revenue YDC has ever brought into the city. SACRAMENTO, California – San Francisco Superior Court Judge A. James Robertson, II, approved the settlement of a Proposition 65 private enforcement lawsuit that will result in a uniform consumer notice being posted in dental offices throughout the state. The approved notice informs consumers about dental materials containing chemicals on the Proposition 65 list. The California Dental Association will be distributing the new consumer notice to all dental offices in California within the next 60 days.

The American Association of Endodontists Names New Executive Director

CHICAGO, Illinois – James M. Drinan, J.D., was named today as the new executive director of the American Association of Endodontists (AAE), effective July 1, 2001, according to Dr. Jeffrey W. Hutter, president of the association. Drinan comes to the AAE from the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) where he has served as Associate Executive Director since 1994. He will succeed the AAE's executive director of the last 21 years, Irma S. Kudo, who is taking early retirement. The AAE Board of Directors selected Drinan after an extensive search. Puerto Rico Dental Association Agrees to Settle FTC Charges of Price Fixing

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – The Colegio de Cirujanos Dentistas de Puerto Rico ("Colegio"), an association of approximately 1800 dentists licensed to practice dentistry in Puerto Rico, has agreed to settle Federal Trade Commission charges that it restrained competition among dentists in Puerto Rico by fixing the terms under which individual dentists would deal with health insurers and other payers of health care services, orchestrating or threatening boycotts of payers by its members to obtain higher reimbursement, and preventing or discouraging truthful, nondeceptive advertising by members. The proposed settlement of the charges would prohibit the Colegio from continuing the illegal conduct alleged in the complaint.
