Our Editorial Policy
Last updated on: May 1, 2006
WebDentistry is accredited by the Health on the Net Foundation, a non-profit, non-governmental organization, accredited to the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations, to establish and standardize the reliability of medical and health information available on the World-Wide Web. To achieve such accreditation, WebDentistry has proved it is compliance with the HON Code of Conduct (HONcode) and agreed to periodic compliance review by the Foundation and to be subject to the Foundation's enforcement policies. We present this policy to explain how health information on our Web site is gathered, reviewed and updated. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please contact us.
Information, Not Personal Professional Advice
We strive to deliver trusted information relating to dentistry and dental health. The content on WebDentistry is provided for informational purposes only and not medical advice or a substitute for professional diagnosis or treatment. Users should always promptly consult with a licensed credentialed professional for diagnosis and treatment of specific health problems. The use of WebDentistry is subject to our terms and conditions.
The Editorial Process
WebDentistry's editors and our advisors decide which topics should be included on our site. Generally, it is our goal to provide consumer health information that will address the most active areas of dental health care and research with additional consideration given to the most frequent inquiries. New topics are chosen based on consumer interest, new developments that influence current practice, advances in prevention and the prevalence of conditions.
Material may originate from our staff, a contracted writer, or by submission from a verifiable source. All text pieces, graphics and tools are subject to a standardized review process.
You should know, and we want you to know, the source of the material you are viewing on our site so this source information is provided with any published story or news article.
Linking to External Web Sites
Our Web site provides links to many professional organizations, government agencies, and some private entities that we feel may be of benefit to our site users. These links are being provided as a convenience and for informational purposes only; they do not constitute an endorsement.
WebDentistry maintains absolute editorial independence. That means that WebDentistry makes decisions about the information on our site free of outside influence. Like most other commercial websites, WebDentistry receives funding from third parties who pay for the right to advertise their companies and products on our site. This funding supports WebDentistry's efforts to develop the most comprehensive and credible consumer health Web site; however, sponsors have no editorial input or influence on the information itself.
We strive to make the most current information available on our site. The date of submission is noted at the top or bottom of each article, review, comment, or posting to our forums.
Who is Reviewing and Creating Content for WebDentistry?
WebDentistry hires experienced writers and editors to prepare material. Additionally, WebDentistry retains experienced freelance writers to assist our editors and staff with this work. WebDentistry's writers and editors have past experience with professional writing or editing of health content in addition to at least five years of professional publishing experience.
We are committed to publishing accurate and balanced information and avoid the use of emotive terms. The only exception is when we are quoting someone directly or in indirect speech. We do not take sides with regard to subjective matters; however, we do require that all sides deliver their position with references and sources they use to reach their conclusion. All content is finally reviewed by WebDentistry's Executive Editor, who has earned the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery from an accredited US dental school and has more than twenty years experience in dentistry as a practicing dentist, educator, and publisher.
WebDentistry is committed to providing accurate, trustworthy health content. It is our policy to make corrections and clarifications to health content whenever we become aware of an inaccurate statement or representation.
Conflicts of Interest
WebDentistry has a conflicts of interest policy for our staff that requires them to reveal to us potential conflicts of interest. Conflicts of interest may be financial relationships, affiliations with groups or organizations, or personal actions. The goal of our policy is to provide health information on our site that is as free of bias as possible.
