OCA Announces Results of Jury Trial

METAIRIE, Louisiana - Orthodontic Centers of America, Inc. (NYSE: OCA) today announced that a federal judge has awarded approximately $301,000 in damages to the Company in connection with counterclaims filed by the Company against Dr. David C. Hobson in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California. In addition, the doctor is to repay approximately $81,000 of indebtedness to the Company. OCA also announced that, following a three week trial, a jury rendered a verdict in favor of the Company on the doctor's claim that the Company had breached its fiduciary duty to the doctor. The jury also found that the Company was in breach of a provision in the doctor's business services and awarded the doctor approximately $82,000 in damages. The Company intends to file a motion with the court seeking an award of attorneys' fees as the prevailing party in the litigation.

Dental X-rays Of Pregnant Women Associated With Low-weight Babies

SEATTLE, Washington – Research conducted at the University of Washington School of Dentistry shows that women who have dental X-rays during pregnancy are three times as likely to have a low-birth-weight, full-term baby as women who did not have diagnostic X-rays during pregnancy. The research by Dr. Philippe Hujoel, professor of dental public health sciences, and his colleagues is being published in the April 28 edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association. The study was funded in part by the Washington State Dental Service Foundation.

CHICAGO, Illinois – Recently published research associating pregnant women's exposure to dental X-rays with low-weight births reinforces the importance of the American Dental Associations long-standing recommendation that, in addition to abdominal shielding (e.g., protective aprons), dentists should use thyroid collars on all patients whenever practical to minimize radiation exposure.
