AGD's Dental Awareness Day is June 29

CHICAGO, Illinois – More than 100 dental experts will be available on Friday, June 29, 2007, to provide free dental advice and answer questions about oral health through the Academy of General Dentistry's (AGD) SmileLine, a non-profit, toll-free national dental health hotline. The 16th annual SmileLine will take place on Dental Awareness Day in conjunction with the AGD’s 55th Annual Meeting & Exhibits in San Diego, Calif., from June 27-July 1, 2007.

Consumers can call the SmileLine, toll-free at 1.800.SMILE.33 (1.800.764.5333) on Friday, June 29, 2007 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET to speak one-on-one with a general dentist regarding difficult or embarrassing oral health concerns.

“The AGD is committed to serve as a life-long resource for oral health information and the annual SmileLine is just one example of our many educational programs,” said AGD President Bruce DeGinder, DDS, MAGD. “Each year a network of our members volunteer their medical expertise to field questions about dental health at all stages of life and have answered questions from more than 16,000 consumers to date.”

Previously Asked Questions

Every year, the range of questions callers ask AGD members staffing the SmileLine varies. In the past, volunteers have provided answers for questions such as:

  • I have white plaque on my teeth that is still present after I brush. What am I doing wrong?
  • I have no saliva or ability to taste? How can I increase my saliva flow?
  • My ten and seven year old children have not lost their baby teeth yet. What could be the cause?
  • My daughter’s front teeth are starting to gray. Is there any reason for this discoloration?
  • Will consumption of alcohol while wearing braces have an effect on the health of my teeth?
  • Can wearing a tongue ring cause cavities?
  • Does kissing cause or spread gum disease?
  • My tongue turned black after I drank pink medication. Do you know why?
