NY Air Guard Seeks Help of Dentists

ALBANY, New York – The New York Air National Guard is currently facing a critical shortage of dentists throughout the five Air Wings and subordinate units in New York State.

During numerous deployments and contingency operations in the last 17 years, it has been apparent that a key factor limiting the medical readiness of personnel to accomplish their mission has been, and continues to be, dental health," says Dr. Reid T. Muller, a surgeon and Colonel with the New York Air National Guard.

According to Col. Muller the Department of Defense has mandated an annual dental exam for all personnel, but a shortage of qualified and interested dentists at many units has made this goal difficult to achieve.

The New York Air National Guard serves a dual role, both as a reserve component of the United States Air Force and as a part of the state militia – supporting the governor and the people of New York State during disasters and other times of need. Units are located in West Hampton, Newburgh, Scotia, Syracuse and Niagara Falls.

There are a number of opportunities available for dentists interested in providing assistance in this important effort. They include participation in the Air National Guard or state level militia or providing contracted services, depending on the level of interest and ability to help.

Dentists interested in discussing these opportunities can contact Col. Muller at Reid.muller@nysyra.ang.af.mil or by phone at 315-256-7513 or 315-247-1122.
