GPHP is a multi-partner project supported by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), EMS Electro Medical Systems S.A. (EMS), and Procter & Gamble (P&G). The new resources highlight FDI’s continued work to bring attention to periodontal health as a priority area for policy worldwide.
What’s the value of a white paper?
The GPHP white paper provides oral health professionals with a comprehensive – yet concise – summary of the main issues related to the global prevalence and impacts of periodontal disease. It also covers the aetiology and pathogenesis, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the disease, as well as identifies the key challenges in tackling the burden of periodontal disease.
The white paper sets out an action plan and calls for collaborative action worldwide. From involving the dental team in prevention and treatment, to engaging with the medical profession to deal with common risk factors, to collaborating with other stakeholders (such as other health organizations) to advocate for periodontal health and integrate oral/periodontal healthcare into all health policies.
How to use the practical guide?
The GPHP advocacy toolkit is based on considerations from the white paper and the 2017 World Oral Health Forum (WOHF). It was produced as a practical guide to help National Dental Associations (NDAs) in designing, conducting and evaluating advocacy campaigns that will advance the implementation of policies to prevent and manage periodontal disease.
The toolkit introduces periodontal health and sets the context for the global burden of periodontal disease. It provides practical guidance on how to establish advocacy goals that will reach policymakers and how to implement successful campaigns. The toolkit also includes templates for periodontal health advocates to write to decision makers and the media, and provides concrete examples of how others elsewhere achieved their goals.
Achieving global periodontal health
FDI is committed to increase global awareness of periodontal health through its GPHP. In 2017, implementation was set in motion to prioritize periodontal health at a national level through health promotion and disease prevention, and to integrate oral and periodontal health into policies addressing noncommunicable diseases.
As part of GPHP, WOHF (held during FDI World Dental Congress 2017 Madrid) focused around periodontal health. WOHF – for which detailed proceedings are available – addressed the importance of periodontal disease, prevention and therapy, and the current problems and recommended actions around it.
FDI also published the results from a global survey conducted by GPHP, which revealed that only 40% of the NDAs who took part had a national monitoring and evaluation plan of periodontal disease. This emphasizes the need for more robust action at the local and national level to be able to win the global battle against the burden of the disease.
