Human Bone Disorder Reproduced in Mice

BETHESDA, Maryland – For the first time, scientists have re-created a unique human bone disease in a laboratory animal model. An international team of researchers at the National Institutes of Health and in Italy were able to remove cells from the bone marrow of patients with a genetic bone disorder, transplant the cells into mice, and grow human bone with the same type of abnormalities seen in the patients.

MouthGuard Myths

CHICAGO, Illinois – The perceived danger in sports forms parents' views toward mouthguards more than the actual risk of injury, according to a recent survey. Parents tend to encourage mouthguards only if their child participates in sports that require mouthguards (like football, hockey or wrestling) or if their child has suffered an oral injury during sports. The results of the survey, published in the December 1997 issue of Pediatric Dentistry, the Journal of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, evaluated parental attitudes to find out why so few parents encourage their children to use mouthguards in sports.

Physicians and Dentists: Allies in Preventive Health for Children

CHICAGO, Illinois – A recent survey of pediatricians and family practitioners shows that physicians who received little or no preventive oral education had less relevant oral knowledge and felt less confident about their overall dental knowledge than those who received some oral education. In the September/October issue of Pediatric Dentistry, the Journal of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, Olga M. Sánchez, DMD, MS, et al., reports that 82 percent of physicians perform oral examinations during pediatric physical exams, but the lack of information physicians receive during medical training may actually limit patient access to preventive oral health.
